Glowing squid.Remember way back in biology class where the teacher talked about bioluminescence? Well it was a bit boring then but when you see it in real lifed its absolutely cool. Take the series of photos below and the one on the left. Those are photos of your ordinary every day pieces of

squid. The photos were taken by a DSLR camera in the dark, without the use of special effects or techniques, the images have been cropped but are otherwise unedited. Yes, the squid pieces had a greenish glow.

(Click on the thumbnails to view high resolution photos.)

These are the squid heads  (the eyes and the guts which were under the spear shaped sheath / mantle of the squid). I had cooked the meat and these were the trimmings. These photos were taken a few hours after I prepped dinner.  The lights were off in the kitchen when we noticed the eerie greenish glow coming from the sink. Cool.

Glowing squid. The glow is actually not coming from the squid but from bioluminescent bacteria in the squid. Biolominescent bacteria are microbes that live in the ocean which produce their own light. They can be found in seawater, the guts of fish, the surface of dead sea animals and some types of squid. The squids actually have specialiazed parts in their bodies which carry these glowy bacteria. These organs are located near and around the area of the eyes. No wonder the leftovers from dinner had a ghostly glow.
